Ride through the heart of Icelandic history on a journey connecting the geothermal wonders of Geysir with the extraordinary landscapes of Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Over four riding days, we travel through remarkably varied scenery — from steaming hot springs and open farmland to peaceful heaths, mountain landscapes and the dramatic rift valley of Þingvellir. Along the way, we pass Laugarvatn, cross the beautiful Lyngdalsheiði heath and spend nights in traditional riding huts, experiencing the simplicity and atmosphere of Icelandic countryside travel.

The journey ends in Þingvellir, one of Iceland’s most treasured places, where the Alþingi parliament was founded more than a thousand years ago and where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly drift apart.

Combining excellent riding, powerful landscapes and some of Iceland’s most important cultural and natural landmarks, the Þingvellir UNESCO Trail offers a unique way to experience the Golden Circle,  from the saddle.

The forward route:

Day 1: Reykjavík – Kjóastaðir – Geysir – Ketilvellir

Pick up at BSÍ Bus Station in Reykjavík in the morning. We drive to Kjóastaðir located between Gullfoss and Geysir, where horses and staff are waiting for us.

After meeting the horses and preparing for the first ride, we set off through the famous Geysir area. Along the way, we take time to stop and explore the geothermal hot springs, where Strokkur erupts regularly and the ground steams with natural power.

From Geysir, we continue our ride towards Ketilvellir. At the end of the riding day, we say goodbye to the horses for the evening and drive back to Kjóastaðir for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Ketilvellir – Laugarvatn – Kringlumýri

After breakfast, we return to the horses and continue our journey westward. On today’s route we pass Laugarvatn a historic area surrounded by lakes, hills, and open farmland and up to Lyngdalsheiði heath beside the mountains towards Kringlumýri.

We ride through varied landscapes with wide views over the southern lowlands and towards the highlands in the distance. The day ends at Kringlumýri, a simple mountain hut where we spend the night in sleeping-bag accommodation. This evening has a true highland feeling, peaceful, remote, and close to nature.

Day 3: Kringlumýri – Skógarhólar, Þingvellir

Today we continue from Kringlumýri towards Þingvellir National Park. The landscape gradually changes as we ride closer to one of Iceland’s most historic and meaningful places.

Our destination is Skógarhólar, a traditional horsemen’s gathering place in Þingvellir. Here we stay in a comfortable hut with sleeping-bag accommodation, showers, and a spacious dining hall. After a good day in the saddle, we enjoy dinner and a relaxing evening together.

Day 4: Riding in Þingvellir – Skógarhólar

On our final riding day, we explore the unique surroundings of Þingvellir National Park on horseback. Þingvellir is one of Iceland’s most treasured places, known for its dramatic rift valley, rich history, and striking natural beauty.

We ride through this remarkable landscape, where Iceland’s parliament was founded over a thousand years ago and where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly drift apart.

In the evening, we celebrate the end of the tour with a festive farewell dinner and one final night at Skógarhólar.

Day 5: Skógarhólar – Reykjavík

After breakfast, guests say goodbye to the group and depart early from Skógarhólar.

Reverse Tour

Day 1: Reykjavík – Skógarhólar – Riding in Þingvellir

Pick up at BSÍ Bus Station in Reykjavík in the morning. We drive to Skógarhólar in Þingvellir, where horses and staff are waiting for us.

After preparing for the ride, we spend the first day exploring the beautiful and historic surroundings of Þingvellir National Park on horseback. We ride through a landscape shaped by history, geology, and nature — a truly special start to the journey.

In the evening, we return to Skógarhólar for dinner and overnight stay in sleeping-bag accommodation. The hut has good facilities, including showers and a spacious dining hall.

Day 2: Skógarhólar – Kringlumýri

Today we leave Þingvellir and ride eastward towards Kringlumýri. The route takes us through peaceful countryside and open riding tracks, with changing views as we travel away from the national park and towards the southern highland edge.

We arrive at Kringlumýri, a simple mountain hut where we spend the night. Accommodation is in sleeping bags, giving the evening a rustic and authentic riding-tour atmosphere.

Day 3: Kringlumýri – Laugarvatn – Ketilvellir – Kjóastaðir

From Kringlumýri, we continue towards Laugarvatn, riding through varied countryside with lakes, hills, and open views along the way.

The route then carries us onwards towards Ketilvellir and the Geysir area. At the end of the riding day, we drive back to Kjóastaðir for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Kjóastaðir – Geysir Area

On the final riding day, we enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Kjóastaðir and the Geysir area. We take time to experience the geothermal landscape, including the famous erupting hot spring Strokkur.

After our last ride, we say goodbye to the horses and celebrate the end of the tour with a farewell dinner and final overnight stay at Kjóastaðir

Day 5: Kjóastaðir – Reykjavík

After breakfast, the guests say their goodbye and depart early from Kjóastaðir, heading back to Reykjavík.
